It’s been a couple of months since I reignited my fitness journey and I’m happy to say that’s going well. In today’s update, I wanted to share what I believe has been the key to consistency and progress.

When I started this journey, my biggest fear was that I would not commit for the long haul. After all, this is not my first to attempt at this. I knew that I had to learn from my past mistakes if this time was going to be different. I started by breaking down the process of what it was going to take to be fit into three elements: exercise, diet and mindset. Rather than work on to many things at once, I decided to master each element at a time.

In the last 2 months, I’ve focused mainly on the exercise part and a little bit of dieting. I knew that If I tried mastering exercise and dieting at the same time, I would drop the ball one thing. I worked out the essential things I need to understand regarding dieting and just followed that then threw all my energy into exercise. I have been working with a personal trainer 3 days a week.

In the last two weeks, I’ve started running around the block or hiking on alternate days when I am not training. Thankfully, because of consistency in exercise, my fitness and energy levels are the best they’ve been in my thirties and working out does not hurt as much. I’ve not shed a lot of weight despite the heavy exercise but that’s the least of my concerns. The goal at this stage is to get consistent on exercise and improve my fitness and form. Sure there’s a whole new level to reach but I now feel like I now have a good baseline.

I’ve found that the key to maintaining consistency is setting inflexible non-negotiable rules. For instance, I go to the gym three days a week and on my gym days, I go there regardless of whether I’m tired or sore. On my hiking days, I go hiking come rain or shine. Today is a perfect example, I went hiking and got rained on half the 7.6km trip. I was nasally the whole way down and could not wait to get back to the car to change my top and crank up the heater. It’s so uplifting being to set a goal and tick them off.

Now that the exercise is starting to get ingrained and become a habit. Over the coming months, I’ll study dieting and geeking out on it. The combination of more calculated dieting and exercise should expedite my results.

The biggest mindset key has been learning to look at my health as a lifestyle and not a short or medium-term project. I’m in this for the long term. Yes, it’s important to shed some weight and achieve a certain milestone but I want to be fit for life.
