You’ve probably heard these two quotes thrown around within the context of advice of the company we keep: “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future” and “You Are The Average Of The Five People You Spend The Most Time With”. I never learnt about this quote until in the last few years but I’ll admit I got this message at a very early age.

In high school, I had a handful of friends that I still stay in touch with today. Throughout my adult life, I’ve had very few friendships. That said, my friendships are deep, impactful and of mutual benefit. I can tell you story after story about how a friend changed my mindset or got me out of a jam. In a nutshell, I’ve come to appreciate that the key to living a great life and is surrounding yourself with enablers.

Enablers are people who don’t just recognise your greatness, but they take the next step and help you get there. I’m blessed to have friends who open doors for me or call me out when I’m living below my potential. You don’t have to be around people who put you down, hold you back or get threatened by your greatness. Get some yourself some enablers.

Surrounding yourself with enablers will probably mean culling of relationships that don’t serve you any more. This can be a lonely place. You’ll probably need to have a criterion for deciding who let in your life. This is hard work and it’s no wonder people get stuck with people who don’t help you grow.
